What Does the Bible Require of a Pastor?

What should a church expect from its pastor?

While preaching ability, leadership skills, and personality often receive the most attention, Scripture places a much greater emphasis on a pastor's character and calling. In 1 Timothy 3, Titus 1, and 1 Peter 5, the Bible establishes a clear picture of the man entrusted with leading and caring for God's people.

Scripture describes a pastor in three ways. He is an overseer, responsible for helping manage the church. He is an elder, providing leadership within the church family. He is also a shepherd, entrusted with the spiritual care of God's people. Each description emphasizes a different responsibility, but all three point toward leadership exercised for the good of others.

Pastoral ministry is also a calling that must be approached with the right motives. God determines the roles within His church, while the man who serves should willingly desire the work and have his calling recognized by others. His purpose is not to gain recognition or authority for himself, but to serve and equip the people God has entrusted to his care. Jesus taught that true greatness is found in serving others.

Because pastoral leadership carries such responsibility, Scripture establishes important qualifications. A pastor should pursue reconciliation, demonstrate faithfulness in marriage, exercise self-control, and approach leadership as a servant. He must not be motivated by financial gain or personal ambition. His ability to manage his household, his humility, and his commitment to God's Word all speak to the kind of man he must be.

Perhaps most importantly, a pastor must remember that the church belongs to Christ. He is not its owner, but a shepherd entrusted with caring for people who belong to God. His responsibility is to lead faithfully, teach sound doctrine, and live as an example to the congregation.

As we recognize Pastor Appreciation Month, Scripture reminds us that honoring pastors and understanding God's expectations for them belong together. The Biblical standard is not simply that a pastor performs his duties well, but that his life reflects the character of the Christ he serves.
