It's About Time

Time may be one of the most valuable gifts God gives us—and one of the easiest to spend without thinking.

In “It’s About Time,” Student Pastor Brennan Oaks begins in Psalm 90:12, where Moses asks God to teach us to number our days so that we might gain a heart of wisdom.

Scripture reminds us that God created time and that the days entrusted to us ultimately belong to Him. We do not know how many we have, which makes the way we use them a matter of stewardship rather than simply scheduling.

That requires decisions.

Our use of time reveals what we value. The urgent can easily crowd out the important. Good opportunities can prevent us from pursuing better ones. And a packed calendar can make us feel significant even when busyness is keeping us from the people and purposes that matter most.

Jesus provides a radically different model. He lived intentionally, regularly withdrew to spend time with the Father, remained focused on the work God sent Him to accomplish, and lived with eternity always in view.

Following that example means learning to prioritize what matters to God: seeking Him first, loving the people He has entrusted to us, investing in things with eternal significance, and recognizing the unique season of life we are currently living.

For families especially, this means asking more than, “Can we fit it in?”

We should also ask, “Is this worth the time God has given us?”

One day our calendars will be empty because our time here will be finished. The goal is to reach that day able to say, like Paul, that we fought the good fight, finished the course, and spent our lives on what mattered.
