Are miracles still for today?
Throughout Scripture, God has demonstrated His power through extraordinary miracles, but why were those miracles given? What role did the miraculous "sign gifts" play in the early church, and how should believers understand them today?
Continuing our Systematic Theology series, Dr. Rocky Ramsey explores one of Christianity's most debated subjects by revealing what the Bible says about miracles, healing, tongues, and other supernatural gifts.
The message begins by reminding believers that while God never changes, there have always been both genuine works of God and counterfeit spiritual movements. Scripture repeatedly warns of false prophets and even Satan-empowered miracles, making Biblical discernment essential.
Rocky then traces the three major periods of concentrated miracles throughout Biblical history—during the ministries of Moses and Joshua, Elijah and Elisha, and ultimately Jesus and His apostles. These miraculous signs served a unique purpose: validating God's revelation and confirming His messengers as His redemptive plan unfolded.
The study also addresses difficult questions that many Christians wrestle with today. If God still heals, why isn't everyone healed? Why did miracles become less frequent later in the New Testament? How should believers evaluate modern miracle claims? Scripture presents a balanced answer: God is absolutely able to work supernaturally, but His purposes extend beyond physical healing alone.
Perhaps the greatest takeaway is that God continues to work miracles in many ways—through His provision, healing, providential circumstances, divine revelation through His Word, and most importantly, transformed lives. The greatest miracle is not simply changing someone's circumstances, but changing someone's heart through the gospel of Jesus Christ and the sanctification of the Holy Spirit.
Ultimately, this message encourages believers to build their faith on the unchanging truth of Scripture rather than chasing extraordinary experiences. Miracles may confirm God's work, but saving faith comes through hearing and believing the Word of God.
“For to one is given the word of wisdom through the Spirit, and to another the word of knowledge according to the same Spirit; to another faith by the same Spirit, and to another gifts of healing by the one Spirit, and to another the effecting of miracles, and to another prophecy, and to another the distinguishing of spirits, to another various kinds of tongues, and to another the interpretation of tongues.
And God has appointed in the church, first apostles, second prophets, third teachers, then miracles, then gifts of healings, helps, administrations, various kinds of tongues. All are not apostles, are they? All are not prophets, are they? All are not teachers, are they? All are not workers of miracles, are they? All do not have gifts of healings, do they? All do not speak with tongues, do they? All do not interpret, do they? But earnestly desire the greater gifts.
And I show you a still more excellent way.”
