Spiritual Gifts: Why God Made You Different

Continuing our study of the Holy Spirit and systematic theology, Dr. Rocky Ramsey examines one of God's most practical gifts to His people: spiritual gifts.

Beginning in Romans 12, Pastor Rocky emphasizes that God creates every person with unique tendencies, talents, personalities, and abilities. At salvation, believers also receive spiritual gifts that are designed to benefit others and strengthen the body of Christ. As Paul wrote in 1 Corinthians 12, many members make up one body, and every member has a purpose.

For through the grace given to me I say to everyone among you not to think more highly of himself than he ought to think; but to think so as to have sound judgment, as God has allotted to each a measure of faith. For just as we have many members in one body and all the members do not have the same function, so we, who are many, are one body in Christ, and individually members one of another. Since we have gifts that differ according to the grace given to us, each of us is to exercise them accordingly: if prophecy, according to the proportion of his faith; if service, in his serving; or he who teaches, in his teaching; or he who exhorts, in his exhortation; he who gives, with liberality; he who leads, with diligence; he who shows mercy, with cheerfulness.
— Romans 12:3-8

Scripture teaches that there are different gifts, different ministries, and different levels of giftedness, yet all are given by God for the common good. Romans 12 highlights motivational gifts such as prophecy, serving, teaching, exhorting, giving, leading, and showing mercy. Ephesians 4 and 1 Corinthians 12 describe ministry gifts and miraculous gifts, all intended to build up the church.

Pastor Rocky reminds us that spiritual gifts are not self-selected. According to 1 Corinthians 12:11, the Holy Spirit distributes gifts according to His will. Often, others recognize our gifts before we do. Discovering God's design involves serving faithfully and listening to wise observations from other believers.

The message concludes with an important reminder: our gifts and abilities are gifts from God to us, but our character, faithfulness, and effort are our gifts back to God. Spiritual gifts are not about prominence; they are about purpose. When believers faithfully use what God has entrusted to them, the body of Christ is strengthened and God is glorified.
