The Danger of Comparison

Comparison is often accepted as normal, but Scripture reveals it to be deeply unhealthy. In this message, William Hunt explains how comparison erodes contentment, robs joy, distorts identity, and damages relationships.

The Bible warns that comparison leads to two powerful sins: pride, when we believe we are better than others, and despair, when we believe we are not enough. Both outcomes come from adopting the wrong standard — measuring ourselves against people rather than God’s calling.

Using the story of Martha and Mary, we see how comparison blinds us to what truly matters. Instead of being present with Jesus, we become distracted by what others are doing.

The path forward is clear: focus on Christ, run your own race, mind your own business, celebrate others, and find satisfaction in God. True contentment is not found in comparison, but in trusting God with the life He has uniquely given you.

But each one must examine his own work, and then he will have reason for boasting in regard to himself alone, and not in regard to another. For each one will bear his own load.
